Personal Loan for Low CIBIL Score: 7 Safe Options in India

A low CIBIL score makes a personal loan harder to get, but not impossible. The key is to choose the right kind of loan and avoid the traps that target people in a hurry. This guide covers what score lenders usually want, seven safer options when your score is low, and how to tell a genuine lender from a fake loan app.

What is the minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan?

There is no single legal minimum. Each lender sets its own rules. As a general guide:

CIBIL score What to expect for a personal loan
750+ Best chance of approval and the lowest interest rates
700–749 Approval is likely, sometimes at a slightly higher rate
650–699 Possible with some lenders, often at higher rates or smaller amounts
Below 650 Most banks decline unsecured loans; consider the options below
NH / NA (no history) Not a bad score. Some lenders offer small first loans

Personal loans are unsecured, meaning there is no collateral, so lenders rely heavily on your score, income and existing EMIs.

7 safer options when your CIBIL score is low

1. Gold loan

You pledge gold jewellery and get a loan against its value. Because it's secured, your CIBIL score matters much less. Repaying on time also improves your score.

2. Loan against fixed deposit (FD)

If you have an FD, banks can lend you a large share of its value at a rate only slightly above the FD rate. There's no need to break the deposit, and approval is quick.

3. Add a co-applicant or guarantor with a good score

A spouse or family member with a strong score and stable income can improve your chances. Be fair to them: if you miss payments, their score suffers too.

4. Ask your own bank first

The bank where your salary is credited can see your income and account history directly. Some banks offer pre-approved loans to existing customers even when the score isn't perfect.

5. RBI-registered NBFCs

Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) are sometimes more flexible than banks, especially for self-employed people. Interest rates are usually higher, so compare the total cost, not just the EMI.

6. Borrow a smaller amount

Asking for ₹50,000 instead of ₹3 lakh lowers the lender's risk. Repay it well, and you'll qualify for more next time.

7. Loan against insurance or salary advance

Some traditional life insurance policies allow loans against their surrender value. Some employers also offer salary advances, which cost nothing in interest.

Red flags: how to spot fake loan apps

People with low scores are prime targets for illegal lenders. Watch for:

  • "No CIBIL check, instant ₹5 lakh" promises
  • Fees demanded before the loan is paid out
  • Apps asking for access to your contacts and photos
  • No clear name of the bank or NBFC behind the app

Check before you borrow. The RBI maintains a public Digital Lending Apps (DLA) directory, operational since July 1, 2025, that lists apps linked to RBI-regulated lenders. Search for the app, or the bank or NBFC behind it, on the RBI website. You can report suspicious lenders on the RBI's Sachet portal.

Every regulated lender must also give you a Key Fact Statement (KFS) showing the full annual cost of the loan (APR), all fees and the repayment schedule before you sign.

Steps to take before you apply

  1. Check your score and report for free on the official bureau sites. See how to check your CIBIL score free.
  2. Fix any errors in your report first. Our CIBIL report guide shows how to raise a dispute.
  3. Apply to one lender at a time. Several applications in a week add multiple hard enquiries and lower your score further.
  4. Keep your total EMIs below 40–50% of your monthly income. Lenders check this closely.

Rejected? Do this next

  • Ask the lender why. It may be your score, income or existing EMIs.
  • Wait 3–6 months while you improve your CIBIL score, then try again.
  • Meanwhile, use a gold loan or FD loan for urgent needs and repay it on time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan with a CIBIL score of 600? It's difficult with most banks, but possible with some NBFCs, with a co-applicant, or through a secured option like a gold loan or FD loan.

Is a personal loan without a CIBIL check safe? Be very careful. Regulated lenders check your credit report. "No CIBIL check" offers often come from unregulated apps with hidden charges or abusive recovery practices.

Which banks give personal loans with a low CIBIL score? Each bank sets its own criteria. See the score that SBI, ICICI Bank and 45 other banks generally look for on our bank-wise guide.
